Color, contrast and movement dominate my work. I strive to create striking depictions of concepts that are important to my life, whether it signifies a deeper meaning, or expresses a fondness of life's simple pleasures.
I work mostly in acrylic paints, but also enjoy watercolor and mixed media collage.
Acrylic paint has evolved from a student grade paint to a fine art staple. I prefer the rich high pigment colors of heavy body paints due to its versatility. It covers well, but can be thinned with water for blending and spreading. The quick drying property is convenient for layering thin washes to achieve dynamic colors.
Collage offers infinite possibilities coupled with the environmental responsiveness of recycling and reusing everyday materials. As an artist I am attracted to imagery and objects that others might find trite. It's exciting to take these typical things and alter them, tear them, scratch them, distort them, fade them and then assemble them all together in way that crafts new meanings and visual experiences.
Watercolor allows beautiful transparent glazing and exciting spontaneous techniques such as spraying, splattering and alcohol textures. The fluidity of the paint is my favorite characteristic; subtle tonal ranges or linear edges can be used to develop forms.
